20TH ANNUAL SAINTS + SINNERS LITERARY FESTIVAL

From the Erotic to the Divine: Poetry as Sacred Song of Sexuality
As song, as public incantation, as witness, ritual and testimony, poetry has always been a sacred
expression—more often than not forged and propagated by queer people, whether they be
shamans, healers, witches, bards or oracles. This tradition, though often overlooked in our
modern scientific world, is as vital and essential today as it has been for millennia. Such poetry is
a gift we as queers have a natural inclination for, and it is a gift we all have within us, whether we
are aware of it or not. This panel will explore ways in which we can all participate in this most
communal of art forms and share our unique gift with a confused and dualistic world that needs
queer voices now more than ever.
Panelists: Flower Conroy, Lisa Dordal, Daniel W.K. Lee, Chip Livingston, and Michael Montlack
Moderator: Brad Richard

Coming of Age in the Time of HIV & AIDS
brings together a range of authors to reflect on
the experience of growing up at the height of the AIDS epidemic, and how such experiences
have shaped our creative practices. We also invite others, perhaps even younger folks
who didn’t grow up at the time, to reflect on the felt legacies of the time as a crucial turning point—both in our personal lives, within queer community, and for the country as a whole. One important goal of the panel is to consider what needs to be written now—about the time of the epidemic, its many legacies, and our community's ongoing grappling with living with HIV. This conversation will be facilitated by writer & podcaster Jonathan Alexander.
Participants: Jobert E. Abueva, Gerard Cabrera, Wes Jamison, Mark S. King, and Daniel W.K. Lee.

Presented by The Splice Poetry Series and Tilted House, local poets Karisma Price, Té V. Smith, Henry Goldkamp, and Daniel W.K. Lee kick off the NOPF’s in-person events!

The Poetry of Place & Queer Creolization of New Orleans Poets
This poetry reading centers around the poetry of location, of place, and how it is transformed, articulated, and experienced as queers, as a theme. Antonio Addessi would introduces the poets Daniel W.K. Lee, Z'étoile Imma, and Brad Richard. Following the reading will be a panel discussion moderated by Addessi discussing with the poets about their experience of being queer and being a part of the New Orleans community. Some of the topics we will explore is inspiration for writing, the writing process and how New Orleans herself has impacted their writing. In essence, we would explore writer Nick Spitzer’s articulation of “creolization,” that is, the conjoining of “multiple sources in new identities and expressions, continuously co-mingling and adapting traditions in ways that link the local, regional, and global.”

19TH ANNUAL SAINTS + SINNERS LITERARY FESTIVAL

Saints + Sinners Writers Read
Take the rare opportunity to hear authors in their own voice. This highlighted Festival event has
authors share their vivid imaginations with their new creations, or revisiting a past work that holds special meaning. Please join us in welcoming: Daniel W.K. Lee, Robert W. Fieseler, Elizabeth Gross, Jan Edwards Hemming, James Magruder, Eric Nguyen, and Felice Picano for this year’s mix of established and exciting new writers.

The Plague Years: AIDS, COVID, and Illness as Metaphor
Mark Doty asks in his AIDS-related memoir, Heaven’s Coast, “When the world shatters, what does a writer do?” For many, the answer is obvious: we write. However, some writers might be hesitant or overwhelmed when sharing certain physical and personal truths. Why and how do we write about AIDS, COVID, or other illnesses? What language do we use? Does our generation, culture, gender, and sexuality impact such writing? Panelists from various genres will discuss approaches, strategies, and
tips for writing about these personal and often emotional moments.
Moderated by David Pratt, the panelists include Ken Harvey, Hans M. Hirschi, Gar McVey-Russell, and Daniel W.K. Lee.

Remembering Who We Are: Writers During Uncertain and Challenging Times
For centuries, many writers have produced their best work as a reaction to uncertain, unsettled times in history, including pandemics, wars, and periods of social/political unrest. However, it is also common for writers to question their creative purpose and overall writing identity during these moments. A panel of writers will discuss how the pandemic and other recent world events have informed, challenged, or complicated their writing and explore what it has taught them about themselves. They will reveal their creative struggles and accomplishments of the past twelve months and examine whether or not writing is even more essential now than ever before. Moderated by Martin Hyatt, the panelists include Cheryl Head, Sassafras Lowrey, and Daniel W.K. Lee.
